I love all kinds of Duck, from Peking Duck to the hanging BBQ Ducks of Hong Kong. Yummy! So when I heard about Korean Duck BBQ I got to try it!
I went for lunch on Friday to Koreatown which is the best time to come to this restaurant because there is no traffic and ample amounts of parking. Actually theres approximately 8 parking spots so make sure to not go when it's busy. This place to me feels like a hole in a wall with old outdated 1980s decor and the restroom feels like it's long overdue for an upgrade. But let's ignore all that and concentrate on the food.
The side dishes were really fresh which accommodates well with the duck. The actual meat is very flavorful and the best part of it is the fat. I love picking up each piece of meat with a piece of fried onion, then dipping it in the salt and pepper. Also don't come here yourself because they require a minimum of 2 orders. So my wife an I order 2 plates of seasoned duck for $27 each. After eating the BBQ they surprised us with a hot bowl of fried rice and a hot spicy soup. I was very satisfied with the meal and will definitely come again. -

FIRST TIME!
I remember I've tried Pecking Duck a long time ago and I remember not being a fan. I'm also not a fan of gamey taste ... i.e. pork, lamb, goat etc.
So duck was in my "never try" category but recently I got curious. Especially curious about the two restaurants that specializes in duck.
I chose Dha Rae Ok because someone told me the sliced fresh duck tastes very similar to beef brisket and it sounded safe.
We were a group of 5 and ordered 2 portion order of sliced duck and the combo plate of smoked duck.
The sliced duck was absolutely delicious! I was hesitant to try but after seeing my friends try them I felt a little more confident. The lady told me that the best way to eat it was to dip in the salt and pepper and she was on point! Duck + chive salad = another amazing combination I learned.
The smoked duck, definitely had a smell and flavor that made me make a squinting expression but immediately enjoyed it after a few bites. To my surprise the smoked duck was more meaty and it went very well with the mustard sauce.
They give you soup/ noodles or fried rice at the end. Since we had ordered the cold noodles we decided to go with the fried rice and .. wow yeah best choice ever.
I'd definitely come back but it was very heavy and oily so I wouldn't frequent this place but I'm glad I finally broke out of my "not going to eat anything gamey" mind set and tried it! I would've never known how delicious duck can be ! -

I absolutely love duck, way more so than the other poultry that an old coworker of mine likes to call "yard bird". I had Dha Rae Ok bookmarked because they offer duck as a meat option for Korean bbq and figured it was finally time to check it off my list.
Parking: it's valet parking only for $3 in their tiny lot behind the restaurant. You can always try looking for street parking but we all know that never works out unless you get lucky.
When we got there it was surprisingly not busy at all, we were seated right away and after browsing the menu decided to go with the smoked duck option for $70. Never having eaten there before, we did not know that the smoked duck came with the platter of duck meat and the duck soup with noodles. We attempted to order another plate of meat and the waitress looked at us and said, "no more, no more, this enough." At first we thought she meant that they didn't have any more of the smoked duck but then we realized she was telling us not to order anymore. We figured that meant that she didn't think we would be able to finish the duck order we had....challenge accepted.
So the first thing brought out was a fairly large size platter of duck meat that our waitress proceeded to put on the grilll for us. The meat is already cooked and all you are doing is warming it up. Meat wise, the duck had really good flavor, definitely different than Chinese roasted duck so do not come in expecting it to taste like that. The duck was tender and fatty and was slightly sweet, I'm not sure how to describe the flavor but it was super good and did not have that gamey after taste that duck can have if not prepared correctly.
After polishing off all the duck they brought out a duck soup with noodles. The duck soup had the leftover parts of the duck that you otherwise wouldn't eat, so they basically use the entire duck. The soup was good, it is spicy though so just a forewarning. The banchans that came with it were fresh but a bit different than usual. The kim chi was not as good as I would have liked but that's to be expected.
Everyone knocks them down a star or so for service or price. Service was great when we went, the servers were attentive, despite the language barrier, we did not have any issues. Price wise, yes it's $70 for duck but to be fair, it's quite a lot of food that could easily feed 3 people or 2 exceptional eaters. Personally, I thought the price was fair, albeit a bit pricey but nothing to warrant knocking a star off.
I would definitely come back and bring more friends to partake in the food. I'm sure they would love it too. -

This was my first time having duck BBQ and I don't know why I haven't been to a place like this before! Driving along Western, you wouldn't think there would be a legit duck BBQ spot where Dha Rae Ok is. There's a valet parking lot in the back since street parking might a little tough to find. The restaurant is deceptively large and there are three sections of seating.
There were five of us and we got two orders of the smoked duck BBQ. They told us that an order of smoked duck BBQ can feed 2-3 people so two orders were perfect for us. When I think of duck, I think of peking duck with hoisin sauce. Since I am used to having beef and chicken at Korean BBQ places, having duck was a great change of scenery. The duck was great and after heating it on the wok and wrapping it in the radish, it was delicious! The banchan was a little bet of a letdown for me; they didn't have odeng (fish cake).
I'm so glad I tried duck BBQ at an authentic Korean spot. I'll definitely be back! -

It was hard to find the entrance, I thought it was closed when I got to the street. The only entrance is at the back parking lot. I went here with a friend for the famous duck. The duck was $27.99 per person, two minimum orders. It comes with soup, salad, fried rice. The duck was great! I had a great time there!
